Peace is maintained by turning inward, adjusting your understanding, and responding to difficulties with patience rather than agitation. If you are to experience peace and joy, you must make a profound adjustment within yourself.

Seek peace within first.

If you bring peace within yourself, you will become a peacemaker in the world outside. Without inner peace, you cannot effectively bring peace outward.

Meet difficulties with courage and endurance.

Every difficulty is an opportunity for you to develop your will and to grow strong. Difficulties can strengthen will and turn the mind toward God.

Use wisdom instead of depression.

When negative thoughts arise, do not fight with them. Be a mere witness.

When adversities arise in your life, do not be depressed. Take recourse to wisdom.

Practice meditation and quiet the mind.

Practise meditation regularly. When the mind has acquired serenity, it enters a peaceful state that surpasses understanding. Try to put away all distracting thoughts, feelings and ideas, and enter into the Peace that surpasses all understanding.

Reduce ego, attachment and hatred.

Peace grows when the mind is freed from egoistic desires. As attachment and hatred are pushed away, you transcend your ego and discover true universal love.

Rely on self-realization and the Self.
It is by Self-realization alone that one is able to truly resolve the root of all problems within the heart. Meditation on the Self leads to the experience of eternal and immutable Peace.

In short: remain peaceful by seeking inner peace, meditating regularly, watching thoughts without being carried away by them, and treating difficulties as opportunities to strengthen will and deepen spiritual understanding.
